「Resort 胜境」 focuses on recent work from six artists each entering the early part of their mid-careers: Chen Yufan, Gao Weigang, Jiang Zhi, Jin Shan, Li Wenguang and Shi Zhiying. A term with a surfeit of ambiguity, Resort posits multiple conflicting realities: paradise or prison; chosen respite or unwelcome last choice. The preceding perilous months have seen unwelcome restrictions present unexpected opportunities. The inability to diversify personal environments has led to a reexamination of daily ablutions - explorations of intimacies which might otherwise be taken for granted - a deepening of relationships which might otherwise have never occurred.

The works in the exhibition have, for the most part, been produced in the period since the pandemic first emerged in the early part of this year. The pieces on display are not a specific response to the pandemic but rather focus on a narrow scope of production within the broader practices of each of the participating artists - an island resort if you will within each of their respective oeuvres.

This approach is designed to showcase the diversity of expression that may lie within the focus on a single subject, a single technique or a single form. The exhibition provides compartments of imagery each inviting a repose in the theatre and threat of discovery.
